Without biogas, the only source of energy available to Lokhim's villagers is fire wood. With biogas, their life is considerably improved because this new energy source saves them time. Up to three hours per family per day are spent to find fire wood. This time will be used on other tasks that generate new income or for education, social activities, etc. Moreover, the fire of biogas is smoke-free which has a very positive impact on the health of villagers, habituated to live in houses filled with thick smoke.
Children are often kept to work for the family. The time saved with biogas will increase their average attendance to school. Moreover, biogas enables the family to properly light one room of their house. Thus, children will have more possibilities to study in the evening.
Biogas also improves agricultural productivity when the fertilizer produced by the plant is used on crops. This extra food production can be sold at Lokhim's market which contributes to increase the family's income.
In order to reach the most poor families, the project also provides microcredits to purchase cows and buffaloes which dung is necessary to feed a biogas unit. The milk and the meat of these new animals, combined with the extra food production improves the average diet of the villagers.
